What’s New?

ZORB BALLS:

“What are Zorb Balls?” we hear you ask. Well, if you’ve ever owned a hamster or if you’ve ever kept a sibling in a giant, plastic ball then you know exactly how much fun your average rodent and/or younger brother or sister  can have in one of these.  Zorb Balls are coming to INDIEPENDENCE this year so if you want to figure out exactly what was going on in your hamster’s head or you simply want to spend even more of your time in a  hazy bubble then Zorb is most definitely for you.

5-A-SIDE Soccer

Last year we saw an inpromptu Cork vs Ireland soccer match take place on site. What better way to celebrate its anniversary than to pay tribute to those brave warriors who graced the hallowed turf of Mitchelstown GAA pitch with their silky skills? This year will see some organised 5-A-SIDE games take place at INDIEPENDENCE. It might be a tournament, it might be for fun; the only thing that is certain is that it will be named “5-A-SIDE”…..unless 6 or more people play on each team, in which case we’re not sure what to call it. 5-A-PENDENCE?

The winners will receive a case of God’s very own nectar, Bavaria.

FESTIVAL SITE:

This year we have a great new site for INDIEPENDENCE. The site is 40 acres situated at Deer Farm under a mile from the centre of Mitchelstown. The site which is a combination of grassland and hardcore is located on a limestone basin at the foot of the Galtee mountains, so why the geological lesson? well, this means its dry and when it does rain, it drains well. We have also increased the number of stages with INDIEPENDENCE 2010 featuring 4 covered stages.

BAVARIA Main Stage:

The Bavaria Main Stage is our new 3,500 capacity permanent structure. Inside you’ll find a top quality sound and lighting system along with the main Bavaria bar. This year, you’ll see acts such as White Lies, Reverend & The Makers and The Coronas amongst the 20 acts taking to this stage over the weekend.

The Cyprus Avenue Arena

For years, Cyprus Avenue on Caroline Street in Cork has been known for breaking up and coming acts and bringing the best international bands to Cork. Their presence at INDIEPENDENCE is no surprise, they share the same ethos that we do, high quality at the right price (just get a beer in the Old Oak and you’ll see what I mean). The Cyprus Avenue Arena sees top quality Irish acts like Delorentos, Jape & Duke Special mingle with upcoming acts from the UK, Germany and Italy in 2010. A tent with a wonderful sound and a warm atmosphere. Be sure sure to check out the stars on the rise here earlier in the day.

The Monster Mash

The Monster Mash tent is presented by Monster Energy. The stage will see a mix of rock, electro and DJ’s from mid afternoon to early morning. This stage will also include the Monster Mix bar where you will be able to pick up a festival style cocktail while kicking back to funky vibes during the day or mashing it up later in the evening.

In the Monster Mayhem Area, anything could happen ! The stage will see a chaotic mix of rock, electro and DJ’s from mid afternoon until whenever. This rig will include the Monster bar where you can cook up your own Monster mix and unleash the beast, while kicking back to wicked and funky vibes during the day or really rockin’ later in the dark.

The Square

The Square is a new addition for 2010. Its an arena within a village within a festival and we can’t wait to start putting it together. This festival has its origins in the square in the centre of Mitchelstown so there is a bit of history in the name for the crew. This year, The Square will see a 1,000 capacity tent where you will be able to see just a little bit of everything. Early in the day, you’ll be able to check out some of the best up and coming talent that Ireland has to offer. Later in the afternoon, its comedy time as things in The Square take their first change. Once the comedian have been chased down and returned to their cages, its back to the bands before a motley crew of DJ’s from a little known city called Waterford take over for a few hours. Its back to live electro here after midnight with a few more surprise thrown in after that!

Around the main tent in The Square, you’ll find the festival’s merchandise tent, vendors selling festival favourites from jewellery to souls. You can get a henna tattoo or a massage, relax in the chill out areas or get some great food and kick back for a moment out from the festival madness around you. There are also loads of picnic tables dotted around here so you can take the weight off the grass.

We will be adding lots more to this area including art installations and a few surprises so keep tuned in for more details!

ONSITE CAMPING

Camping this year is onsite. It’s less then 10 yards from the gate of the campsite to the main arena entrance. We like the odds of finding your way back to your tent at 4am over that distance!
